Obamaware – Politics at the kitchen table

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | No Comments »

Ayumi of wrote in to let us know about an interesting action that will start soon: “I’ve curated a ceramics show of 28 ceramic artists to make Obama/Biden themed work, with 50% of proceeds going to Obama… This is the only ceramic specific show I know of, plus we’ll have an essay up about this show in relation to historical political pottery.”

The site was down due to heavy traffic, but it looks like it is back up now. They may have to move the auction to ebay – to better meet the strain. Stay tuned for details. Also, it looks like the artist number has dropped from 28 (kiln disaster) to 27. I just hope that by “disaster”, Ayumi means that the work was destroyed (not the artist!)

Now we’re talking real change

Theodore (Ted) Stanke writes in: “Hi.  I’m a Brooklyn based artist with some new work about the election.  It’s a mosaic made from chopped up American coins, pennies & nickels for Obama, who is huge, and Quarters, dimes and dollars for McCain, who is tiny. ”

This just in from Timon Tupper in Sheboygan, WI: “thought I’d send some pics of an Omama stencil I made back in May. I made a bunch of posters and have been giving them away. Check out more pics and the process of making the stencil on my flickr“.

Reader Allison sent us a link to this rockin AC/DC themed poster by Jamey Erickson. The poster is in the Poster Offensive’s photostream. Check out the set or PO’s website for lots of other great political work. This is just a section of the poster. Jump inside to see why we zoomed in.

Just received this message from an artist named Lichiban that we are happy to post: “I’m a Brooklyn-based visual artist from Hungary, and have been very much involved in supporting the Obama movement over here in BK through means that I could. I’m not a citizen so I can’t vote but I’ve been doing various fundraisers and Obama artwork to further the cause.”

Over the past few months we have been encouraging you to send in your art. The other day we received the following: “Greetings Obama Team, Can you help me get this painting to the Obama campaign? I am an artist trying to donate my talent to the campaign to help raise money. I really would like to become part of the ARTIST FOR OBAMA team. I created this painting for that purpose. Thanks, Andre Harris”

Fused glass obama

Michael Woodman sent in some art in a whole new medium – glass! The following is a fused glass tile that he created: “Size 7″x5″. I did of Sen. Obama. It will most likely be mounted into a 11″ square shadowbox.”

Welcome to The Art of Obama - where the art is political and updated daily. Take a look around, leave some comments, or send us your art and photos.
